This sculpture was created for a friend's 50th birthday. They wanted height so it stands 1.4 metres tall.
To begin the project I offered a concept drawing which included several elements representing whanau.
After the go ahead was given the challenge was to give life to the 3D effect with layers of depth and to finish with a design on the other side while staying true to the original drawing.
It has light passing through, curves, sharp edges, and texture. It was challenging getting the back design to gel with the front.
I started a concept series called "Nga koru". I wanted to explore a variety of design ideas incorporated into one sculpture. Many are variations of koru hence the name. With both sides there is always something to catch your eye. Because the original design is only on one side, the challenge was developing the other side to match.
I was very happy with the end result.
